DISCLOSURE OF GOVERNMENT WITNESS "INDIVIDUAL"
"Individual" was interviewed telephonically on Sept 19, 2004 by FBI Special Agent, Jay F. Kramer (FBI-New York), and Special Agent, Eric Ruona and Supervisory Special Agent, John Terry (FBI-Philadelphia). "Individual" advised as follows:
Salemme told "individual" he knew individual's father from the time he spent in Monte's Restuarant in Brooklyn (while he was a fugitive for the 1968 car-bombing of Attorney John Fitzgerald and the murder of William Bennett. It was for these crimes that John Connolly arrested Frank Salemme on Dec 14, 1972.) Andrew Russo, a capo in the Columbo Family in NYC was one of the individuals who assisted Salemme in staying on the "lam" during this period. Russo is now a major player in the NY Mafia.
With the backing of Andrew Russo and Carmine Persico, Frank Salemme was elevated to the position of "Acting Boss" of the New England Patriarca Family.
Salemme told "individual" that he felt Connolly "set him up" in connection with an unrelated indictment.
Salemme told "individual" he felt that Connolly had somehow set him up and that Connolly was in the area when he got shot by a rival LCN faction. (Salemme was shot, according to information received from top echelon FBI informants, by the Boston LCN faction led by Joe Russo, Bobby Caruzza and Vincent Ferrara after they learned from Frank Pugliano,(Salemme loyalist who jumped ship) that Salemme had caused Patriarca Family Boss, Raymond Patriarca, Jr., to put out a "contract" to murder Vincent Ferrara. More importantly, Salemme signed an affidavit claiming that he didn't blame Connolly for the attempt on his life.
Salemme told "individual" he was not going to take the stand against anyone from the La Cosa Nostra and that he should not be considered a "real cooperating witness" because he was going to be testifying against an FBI Agent.
"Individual" told the FBI agents that shortly after Salemme was released form the WITSEC Unit he read a newspaper account in which Salemme was described walking out of a Boston restaurant. Further confirmation that his testimony was a sham.
Salemme told the "individual" that he was looking forward to testifying against COnnolly and that he wanted to "get back" at Connolly for what he felt was a conspiracy to kill him.
Salemme confined to "CS" that he continued to have loyal members of his "street crew" engaging in illegal activities on his behalf back in Boston. This corroborates Vella, and further evidence Salemme lied to prosecutors in his plea agreement, as well as lying to Judge Wolf at his sentencing hearing about renouncing his Mafia membership about "going straight."
"Individual" told the FBI agent that after testifying, Salemme told the "individual" that he felt, (as did everyone else, according to Salemme) that his testimony went great.
